Judicial Clerkship & Scholarship Programs

Dow Lohnes has a number of bonus and scholarship programs, and we encourage candidates to take advantage of them.  We believe that the following three programs may be of considerable interest to students and judicial clerks.

Judicial Clerkship Bonus Program

Many of our lawyers have served as judicial clerks for judges all across the country. We believe that this is an important public service as well as an enriching experience for new lawyers interested in gaining an uncommon perspective on the judicial system.

Accordingly, in recognition of the experience and perspective judicial clerks bring to our legal practice, associates joining the firm immediately following the conclusion of a clerkship at a federal trial or appellate court or the highest court of a state or the District of Columbia will be paid a bonus of $35,000.  Associates will receive full credit (up to two years) towards partnership consideration for time spent while clerking.  An additional bonus amount for a two-year federal or state supreme court clerkship will be considered on a case-by-case basis depending on several factors, including the court and the relevance of the extended clerkship to the practice group the individual is joining.  Bonus amount and credit for judicial clerkships with other courts will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The Dow Lohnes Diversity Scholarship and Mentor Program

Dow Lohnes is proud to reflect its strong commitment to increasing diversity in the legal profession through the Dow Lohnes Diversity Scholarship and Mentor Program.

Three scholarships of $7,500 are awarded annually to rising second-year law student at The George Washington University Law School, Georgetown University Law Center, and Howard University School of Law.  Recipients are selected based on personal and academic accomplishments, financial need, demonstrated leadership and commitment to serving the legal profession, the community and the public interest.

Equally important, Dow Lohnes will provide to each scholarship recipient an Attorney-Mentor from the firm to offer guidance on a range of career development topics and to provide access to training resources during the second and third years of law school.

For more information about applying for this scholarship program, please contact the financial aid office at the following law schools: The George Washington University Law School, The Georgetown University Law Center, and The Howard University School of Law.

B. Dwight Perry-Dow Lohnes Employee Law School Scholarship Program

Dow Lohnes has established a special scholarship program for its own employees who decide to attend law school. The B. Dwight Perry - Dow Lohnes Employee Law School Scholarship Program is named in honor of our former Managing Partner, Bill Perry, who was keenly dedicated to promoting and developing our staff. Dow Lohnes recognizes that one of the building blocks for our legal practice is our professional staff, and we have seen many of our own paralegals and other employees go on to become great lawyers, often returning to the firm to continue their legal careers.

The program awards on a selective basis, and each Scholarship recipient receives a tax-free $10,000 scholarship, which will be awarded in installments of $5,000 in each of two years of law school attendance.
