Communications

The lawyers in Dow Lohnes's Communications Group specialize in the representation of all segments of the communications and media industry regulated by the Federal Communications Commission and other federal and state government agencies. Dow Lohnes's communications and media practice is one of the largest and most diverse communications law practices in the United States. For well over half a century, Dow Lohnes's communications and media practice has grown and evolved along with the industry, so that Dow Lohnes has extensive institutional experience in counseling clients in changing economic and regulatory environments. The firm's communications practice serves commercial and non-commercial broadcast stations; wireless and wireline telephony providers; newspapers; cable television operators; manufacturers of radio frequency equipment; tower companies; companies developing new and emerging technologies; and banks, investment companies and other financial institutions that serve the industry. Dow Lohnes clients range from closely-held family businesses to large publicly traded conglomerates.

Dow Lohnes Communications Group lawyers regularly handle federal licensing matters, sales and purchases of broadcast, cable television, telephony, and other media properties, and a variety of other business transactions and ventures affected by federal regulation. Our lawyers participate in FCC and state and local regulatory proceedings, in the development of federal and state legislation, and in federal and state court actions. We counsel clients on regulatory and legislative trends that affect their businesses or that open new business opportunities, including cross-media ventures such as use of digital television excess spectrum. Because of the breadth of our representation of media companies, we continuously monitor regulatory developments at the FCC and in Congress, counsel communications companies on obtaining and maintaining FCC authorizations, and maintain a staff of legal assistants adept at retrieving information from the FCC.

Dow Lohnes's experience in transactions and financings makes our Communications Group lawyers particularly attuned to the needs of financial clients that lend to and invest in the industry. Our lawyers' experience with virtually every significant business regulated by the Federal Communications Commission gives us particular advantages in dealing with ownership and other regulatory issues arising from mergers and other combinations of media properties.

Dow Lohnes also has the nation's leading practice representing public (noncommercial) broadcasting stations and educational institutions. Dow Lohnes's work for public broadcasters and educational institutions includes representation before the FCC and negotiation of agreements ranging from leasing of ITFS excess capacity to the creation, licensing and distribution of broadcast programming. Dow Lohnes advises its public broadcasting clients on technical issues including conversion to digital television, copyright, trademark, privacy, first amendment and tort liability issues.
